FIFA 17 Frostbite has become a more multi-purpose engine

When you first begin playing FUT 17, the game will ask you to name your team; you’re free to change this name at any point. From there you will receive a roster generated at random. The first thing that will stand out (in addition to a lack of superstars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo) are the bronze, silver or gold card backings for each FIFA 17 player. Once at a team your life starts to take off, at times the going will be good and at others things will go horribly wrong. In the demo we played, Alex (who isn’t a customisable character by the way) was just about to make his debut for Manchester United, coming on as a substitute at Anfield.
But in another scene that we saw, Alex had been told that he was being sent out on loan to a championship club and then finds out, by watching TV, that his club have brought in Harry Kane to replace him and partner with his bestie up front. Apparently the narrative is scripted, but your performances and off pitch antics can impact some areas of it. Changing a game engine is no small task and for two years EA Canada has had its ‘brightest guys’ working on transferring FIFA 17 from the incumbent Ignite engine to the more advanced Frostbite. Where Ignite was a bespoke sports engine.
FIFA 17 Frostbite is the technology that underpins many of EA’s current and upcoming games including Star Wars Battlefront, Mirror’s Edge and Need for Speed. Originally designed by Battlefield developer DICE for first-person-shooters, FIFA 17 Frostbite has become a more multi-purpose engine. “We’ve had to make it work with our systems,” says Prior. “But fundamentally it works with any kind of game. With the caveat that we have to bring our own stuff in. The core of the FIFA 17 gameplay has been brought over from Ignite, it’s not as if we’ve scrapped all that and rewrote it from the ground up, and then we can build on that with the new feature-set.

One area of the game that Prior insists could only have been done in the FIFA 17 new engine is The Journey, a fully-scripted story mode that follows the career of FIFA 17 young Premier League starlet Alex Hunter who finds himself thrust into the first team. You play as Hunter as he embarks on his prodigious career alongside life-long friend Gareth Walker.
A player with ranking anywhere between 0-64 is bronze, a person ranked 65-74 is silver and finally, players with ranking 75-99 are gold. The latter represents the best players in FUT 17, and you must know each person’s attributes (speed, passing ability and so forth). You should name one of these players the captain of your team (this does not improve the team per se, it’s merely a cool feature) and build around this person.
