Whether to recommend Black Desert or not is a bit of a tricky question

Black Desert Online is probably more famous for its custom creation than its actual gameplay. Appearing on the scene after videos and screen shots showed the depth of customization available to the player when creating a character - everything from facial features to spots, freckles, hair dye and curls - the game has recently finished its closed beta where players could get to grips with its systems.

Upon the first attempt to find monsters to kill, you will notice, that the monsters have adapted themselves to their surroundings, almost being fully camouflaged, making the use of the in game radar necessary. You will find many creatures like wolves, foxes, ferret like dragons and many more. There’s also goblins, equipped with all kinds of weapons and armors and the further you travel, you’ll eventually come across the strongest of monsters, that look like rocks and make use of magic.

Yes it’s a PvP game but the penalty of killing non PvP player is so huge that you will not get any ganging etc. Most of the PvP in this game will be limited to Guild v Guild etc. I think you can simply ignore the PVP and follow the PvE path. The game is $30 and I am quite sure quite a few hundred quality hours to be had from this game. Oh just don’t look at the their Cash Shop! It has crazy prices but you don’t need anything from it!

The combat is where the game is strongest. Whilst it features the traditional action bar letting you cast abilities using the number keys (or whatever you rebind them to) it also uses a more action based system. So for example by clicking the mouse key I might do a normal attack, however if I’m moving backwards and click then I cast my shadow claw. Similarly moving left will cast something else. This combat feels pretty good even if it does take a while to get used to. It has some real weight to it.

Despite this (up until this point) none of the enemies have been very interesting meaning that the true limits of the combat is yet to be seen. The main screen is really well designed and offers a nice overview of all the important things you’ll need to be aware of. It shows your current level and the number of skill points you have in the upper left of the screen; and on the right side of the screen, your active quests and the recommended level for each one, right below the mini-map.

The world is overflowing with resources to gather and crafting recipes to try out, up to and including fishing (which can be done while idling, or via an active mini game which increases fish quality.) There’s so much to do that it actually feels a bit overwhelming, especially if you veer off the otherwise this-sure-seems-like-one-big-tutorial main quest in favor of exploring the world by yourself. For a game which doesn’t charge a monthly fee, this is a delight - and I can practically guarantee that any player who craves sandbox exploration or who finds themselves lost in crafting and trade will get their money’s worth out of BDO and then some.

Whether to recommend Black Desert or not is a bit of a tricky question given the cash shop situation. What I would advise you right now is to wait and see if the absurd shop prices change in the near future because a game that costs €30 shouldn't behave like a very bad example of a free to play game. If the prices do change and you're someone that enjoys both PvP and relentless combat then Black Desert might be the game for you.
