When it comes to choosing race and class in Black Desert Online, however, there is far less choice than expected. Classes are automatically assigned gender and race with no room for variation, so if a player wants to roll a Ranger, they’re going to have to convince themselves they wanted to be a female Elf as well. It’s odd that a game so dedicated to letting players do whatever they want would draw the line at something as simple as the freedom of gender and race selection, which have been staples of MMOs that few have argued against having, and it’s a little disappointing too.

You unlock knowledge about NPCs by talking to NPCs. Each NPC belongs to one knowledge group or the other (some might span multiple groups, but I didn’t check on that). You can check your progress on the Knowledge UI (“H”). This screen contains all of what you know in BDO, and spans all characters in your family. If you play the game(“M”) you can hover over icons to identify the location of many of the game key point, although this is not going to be available 100% of the time.

 

The Olvia Fisherman isn’t in town, but you won’t see him out by the coast unless you explore out that way to uncover the area on your map. NPCs in Black Desert are not just for making world more interactive and friendly. They don’t just give quests and trade with you. They have their personal relations with your character and the level of your relations with definite NPC affects gameplay. If you have good relations with a definite NPC you may get extra quests with great reward, items, buffs, information or even access to special assortment in a shop. Alchemists will sell you stronger potions , you will be able to get better horses in stable and so on. It’s great to have good relations because you get access to extra opportunities.

 

But those pieces of lore can also be used to befriend Black Desert. Each Black Desert aspect has an interest in certain things, such as a specific person, or a mob, insects, a town, etc. This can be seen in the form of a ring around NPCs. Once you have enough intel about a topic of interest, the NPC interested in said topic will allow you to engage in a knowledge exchange conversation (an extra dialogue option). This is presented in the form of a minigame.
