Black Desert is a combat focused MMORPG that features a large open world, skill based fighting system, in-depth crafting, large scale PvP and some beautiful visuals to go along with all of that. The pre-order in-game item rewards has problems and the game has a large world to explore as well as an abundance of little details that allow more immersion for the player than an average MMO. The site’s review doesn’t have a lot of details about the PvP and castle sieges, but they’ll discuss the topic once they’ve hit the endgame, as said in the article.
To learn more about who you are, you’ll need to talk to various people around the village, who will ultimately refer you to the village elder, Igor. He informs you that you are in Olvia, a small settlement in the realm of Balenos. He recognizes you as an adventurer and recommends that you speak to other people living in the village who know a thing or two about adventuring and the dangers you might face in the outside world. The first person you meet is Edan, a specialist in artifacts and ruins, and after you talk to him, you’ll end up with your “Skill Instructor”, who will try to teach you the basics of combat in the world of Black Desert Online.
So starting the game we get the traditional MMO tutorial that drags on and on and on. The story is the classic defend the village, grab six bags of wheat so we can make bread. But then it is the tutorial so what would you expect? The issue is (and remember I only got about seven hours in) even after the tutorial things don’t seem to get any better. The quests largely have no story that I care about and rarely get more interesting than killing some stuff to get the Mac Guffins.
The Ranger in Black Desert Online follows the traditional setup, which is being characterized by low physical and magical defense on the one hand and its great range and physical damage on the other. One has to be prudent when fighting, since enemies that try to engage in melee combat pose a great threat. Yet, it is not the end of the world, since the Ranger can make use of dagger orientated skills, stun & knock back with kicks and exploit their unlimited supply of arrows.
Been playing Black Desert Online closed beta over the weekend. It is a MMO but if you love Skyrim you will love this game. It’s one seamless world (no loading screens at all, even for indoors etc) and its absolutely beautiful on mid range PC so it’s an explorers heaven! It’s one of the very few games these days where the night is really dark and you need lanterns to get by! There are lot of small touches like this in the game. The game looks great when beefed up to full graphics. The environments are populated with tall grass, swaying trees and innumerable details that really bring the setting to life.
Frame rates do tend to take a dive in hub zones and areas filled with other players, especially when the combat starts spewing flashing lights, effects and particles. Mounts range from Donkey's to horse, and can be obtained in two to three ways, Donkeys can be obtained via a stable for in-game currency or via a story quest, Horses however can only be obtained in three ways, purchasing a low level horse from a stable, from the horse market or taming them out in the wild. Horses can also be breed, which can obtain you a higher tier horse if you are lucky.
Like always, I take breaks from MMO’s, everyone does, but even when the game is in Korean, this is the new MMO for me. The game I will return to when I want to do a bit of adventuring.
