There is a glaring issue at the center of Black Desert Online

2016-04-05 10:53:05
Black Desert Online has a good deal of automation, and while I’d normally balk at the idea of being able to set way points and let my character auto-run to them, these features feel necessary. The world of Black Desert is massive, and there’s a distinct focus on making a more realistic experience rather than a convenient one. Objects in your inventory weigh you down - even money, there’s also no immediate fast travel, bank space is regional, and everything you do has some associated maintenance fee that will always keep you working.

With all this effort paid to creating a more demanding game, being able to let my character steer herself back to a city after a quest feels like a natural concession. The answer, at least for Black Desert Online, is surprisingly well. For all intents and purposes, Black Desert Online is one of the most in-depth and intuitive entries into the genre in a long time. The game is visually appealing, has incredibly complex crafting and social systems, and has some of the best content ever seen in a MMO.

Unfortunately, however, there is a glaring issue at the center of Black Desert Online that is impossible to ignore, the kind that takes a great game and makes it merely very good instead. While not true for all classes, with bigger brawlers remaining more planted, many are like the Sorceress I played with high maneuver ability, expected to dance around the enemy and the battlefield. It’s surprisingly energetic for a genre that tends to be able to be experienced in a more relaxed, hot key-driven manner.

Now that the bumps have been mostly ironed out and Daum Games’ massively multiplayer role-playing game is available to the general public, it’s time to take a look at what exactly all of those painstakingly-crafted characters are doing inside the world. Unlike previous iterations of the game, Black Desert Online in the West requires a one-time purchase to play (like Guild Wars). Since folks have to shell out at least $30.00 to gain access, I made the video atop the post in order to give them an idea of what to expect.

A substantial chunk of the issues detailed stem for a technical issue that saw folks creating characters thinking they were going to be on one server only to discover they’d wound up on another entirely. That resulted in missed connections with guilds or friends as well as one-time pre-order items being claimed on the wrong server. Like many hopeful players of the hit Korean sandbox-style high fantasy game, I was up at 2 AM this morning waiting for Black Desert’s servers to go live.

And while I am interested in many aspects of the game - the fast-paced combat, the housing design, public battles against massive monsters, fishing. My main reason for being up so late was to make a character. That’s all. Just make a character. Similarly, players will be able to choose six classes at release: Warrior, Wizard/Witch, Sorcerer, Valkyrie, Ranger and Berserker. They’ve chosen these ones since the others have an Asian flair, but I’ve been assured that the remaining classes will be added “rather fast” to Black Desert Online after launch.

Even though combat is amazing, you will mostly level by killing enemies. Even I can get tired of doing this for long periods of time. Luckily, the game has so many other things to do, including a unique trade system that makes me actually want to do something other than combat. Farming, mastering the economy, buildings things like boats, fishing, and even horse taming, are some of the things you can occupy yourself with in this game.
